Born in Houston, John Schulz Jr. has spent most of his life in Knoxville, graduating from FLS and eventually the University of Tennessee with a degree in Industrial Engineering. John is an industrial engineering supervisor at Denso Corporation. He joined the Board of Christian Day School in 2009 after serving two terms as congregational president at First Lutheran Church. Having spent nine years in a Christian day school, John knows firsthand the importance of a Christ-centered education and the role the school plays in outreach to the community.

After serving a six-year stint in the U.S. Navy and attending Pellissippi State University, Mark Fettig began working in the information technologies department at Brunswick Corporation in Knoxville, where he is now the regional IT manager. Mark is married to Debbie (Niedens) Fettig, who is an FLS alumna, and he has a son, Joshua. Mark joined the Board in 2010.

As an investment manager at Home Federal Bank, Tom Garst brings a host of financial experience to the Board, which he joined in 2010 in order to help support and sustain First Lutheran School’s important legacy. He has a master’s and doctorate from the UT Knoxville Graduate School of Business, and occasionally teaches classes at various colleges and universities in the area. Tom is married to Alicia, and they have a son and a daughter.

Dr. Matthew Lundien, an MD specializing in pediatric pulmonology and sleep disorders medicine at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, joined the Board of Christian Day School in 2010. He and his wife, Dawn, chose FLS for their two children to provide them with the best possible academic opportunities in the context of a Lutheran Christian environment. Dr. Lundien is originally from Vicksburg, Miss., and has also lived in Illinois, Louisiana, Indiana, South Dakota, and Tennessee.

After spending most of her life in Clay Center, Kansas, Jennifer struck out for the wilds of Tennessee four years ago, living in Knox and Blount counties. With a master’s degree in social work and a professional background in children and adolescent mental health, geriatric psychiatric/alzheimers and dementia, and hospice, Jennifer serves as a hospice social worker at Blount Memorial Hospice in Maryville. She joined the Board of Christian Day School in 2012.

Mark Parker holds an MBA from the University of Memphis and is a systems analyst for the City of Knoxville, where he works on information systems for human resources and financials. Mark is married to Rhonda, a speech pathologist, and they have three children, two of whom attend FLS and one a future student. He joined the Board of Christian Day School in 2010.

Wendy Slifka, an MBA who works as a business management analyst for Knoxville Utilities Board, joined the Board of Christian Day School in 2011. Originally from suburban St. Louis, Wendy attended St. John’s Lutheran School from K-8, the same school her mom attended. She and her husband, Doug, want their son to receive the same quality Lutheran education that Wendy had, and she hopes to help First Lutheran School thrive and grow during her tenure on the Board.

Originally from the Caribbean island of Curacao, a constituent country of the Netherlands, Wendy has lived in Knoxville for the past thirty years. She is an associate professor of languages with an M.A. in foreign language education, and has taught at two- and four-year colleges. Wendy and her husband, Jeffery, chose FLS for their two younger children because they love the combination of accessible teachers, challenging academics, and safe community feel. She joined the Board in 2012.
