Music
First Lutheran School offers band and choir programs designed to teach students music literacy and music appreciation.
Choir
FLS has three choirs: K-2 grade, 3-5 grade, and 6-8 grade. Each choir sings for:
- Two regular worship services at First Lutheran Church
- The worship service on the Sunday following National Lutheran Schools Week
- The Christmas program
- The school musical
In each choir, students are introduced to varying levels of music. In the 6-8 grade choir, students are split into parts to learn harmony and chords. Choirs perform music at various ability levels and in different languages.
Band
Band is for students in grades 4-8. Students begin by trying a few different instruments and deciding which one is best for them. We encourage students to play traditional band instruments like flute, clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, trombone, drums/bells, and oboe. Once this process is completed, students rent or purchase an instrument and begin learning the basics.
We use a popular method book called Essential Elements 2000. Each book contains a DVD and a CD for students to practice with, so they can hear what they need to do while practicing at home. The 6-8 grade band works from the Essential Elements Book 2, and we incorporate various other teaching methods such as band arrangements, rhythm studies, and pep band music.
The 6-8 grade band performs at the Christmas Program and Spring Musical. Grades in the band program are based on class participation, performances, individual playing tests, and weekly practice records.
