Arts

The Arts program at First Lutheran School is based on the Tennessee Curriculum Standards and is taught in conjunction with Core Knowledge principles. Each grade level works on a different curriculum that helps enhance what they are learning in the classroom. Here are some sample projects by grade:

K-5arts

K-5 art is completed by the classroom teacher and encompasses a wide variety of topics. Basic visual arts skills are learned and many art projects are used to enhance other classroom curriculum. For example, students learning about China might make paper lanterns that teach basic art skills and enhances their learning about China.

Sixth grade

Sixth grade is an art history year, beginning with antiquity and moving through to the modern movement. Students take notes, discuss the time period as it relates to art, music, literature, science, etc., and do a project based on each time period.

Seventh grade

Seventh grade works on modern artists, basic drawing techniques, positive/negative space, and a craft session based on Tennessee history.

Eighth grade

Eight graders begin with the modern period and study several artists, doing a project for each artist to help understand the artist, his or her techniques, and why they work in the particular style. Next is photography and the basics of cameras, and the last few weeks of the year, students choose a time period, artist, or technique to work on.
