Athletics
As part of our goal of developing well-rounded students within the framework of Christian education, First Lutheran School maintains an athletic program with the following objectives with regard to each child:
- To aid the child in understanding and correctly developing his physical skills
- To provide the child with the opportunity to practice Christian ethics within the sphere of athletics
- To provide the child with the opportunity to enjoy athletic activity and competition
- To introduce the child to team concepts and to emphasize their importance
- To strengthen school spirit
Sports programs at FLS
FLS is a member of the Knoxville Independent School League (KISL). We offer the following sports to students grades 5-8:
- Girls’ volleyball (fall)
- Boys’ and girls’ basketball (winter)
- Boys’ and girls’ basketball cheerleading (winter)
- Cross-country
Because we view athletics as another opportunity to work as a team, learn grace, and build character, we don’t limit team members by tryouts. Everyone is welcome to play.
The highlight of the athletic year is a 5-team basketball tournament in early March. We compete against teams from New Orleans, LA, Hickory, NC, and Huntsville, AL in a weekend tournament.
Costs
The cost to participate in sports is $20, except for cheerleading. Cheerleaders are responsible for buying their own uniforms.
Our athletics program is entirely self-funded; we rely on the support of parents and patrons at our games and concession stands. This year we have an exciting opportunity to run a concession stand at UT’s home football games. Proceeds will be split between our scholarship program and the athletic department.
GPA
All students who wish to participate in athletic activities must have a C average. A detailed athletics policy is available from the school office.
